Corneal Dystrophy is a genetic disorder that can cause blindness

It causes blurry vision and may lead to complete loss of sight

Many corneal dystrophies begin before age 20 and may take years before they cloud your eyesight

Treatment will depend on your type of dystrophy

Corneal dystrophies are rare traits inherited through genes that affect the cornea (the front window of the eye).

They appear later in life and cause a build up of foreign material in one or more layers of your cornea. Over time, your vision may become cloudy or blurry.

Corneal dystrophies often affect both corneas and can affect men and women equally except for Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (one of the variations), which affects women more.

What are the symptoms?

Besides cloudy or blurry vision, here are some of the other ways corneal dystrophy might affect you:

  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Glare
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Pain in the eye
  • Corneal erosions (scratches on the eye surface).
Most cases of corneal dystrophy are inherited, making genetics the most common cause.
We can diagnose corneal dystrophy through a routine exam. A special tool called a slit lamp microscope lets the doctor see abnormal deposits on your cornea before noticing problems. If you have a family history of corneal dystrophy, be sure to mention it to our doctors.
There are different methods of treatment depending on the severity and symptoms. For example, if the vision is obscured, our doctors might offer laser surgery to polish the cornea’s surface or replace the diseased cornea with a new clear one.

Corneal diseases are a leading cause of blindness and vision impairment all over the world

Corneal blindness, one of the major causes of reversible blindness, can be managed with transplantation of a healthy donor cornea. It is the most successful organ transplantation in the human body as cornea is devoid of vasculature, minimizing the risk of graft rejection. Click here for more information.

The consequences of a corneal transplant are evaluated and classified by care providers, but understanding and interpretation of the results varies between patients, and creates different views for them and influences their lives in different ways while these influences are largely unknown. A cornea transplant is an operation to remove all or part of a damaged cornea and replace it with healthy donor tissue. A cornea transplant is often referred to as keratoplasty or a corneal graft. Click here for more information.

The cornea is the curved ‘window’ at the front of the eye, which must be clear to enable you to see. The cornea can become hazy due to disease or injury; this will mean that you can no longer see clearly through it. A corneal graft (transplant) operation may be performed to replace the diseased cornea. Click here for more information.

Corneal ring implantation is a surgical procedure for inserting a ring of plastic into the middle layer of your cornea. This can correct certain problems with your cornea and enable you to see clearly. Click here for more information.
