Many patients don’t seek treatment in time because they aren’t aware of the symptoms or how dangerous it can be

The cornea is the clear part in the front of the eye. A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea. It’s a very serious condition and should be treated properly, or it may lead to permanent scarring of the cornea with either partial or complete blindness.

What are the symptoms?

A corneal ulcer may cause redness, pain, increased tears, and pus or mucus draining from the eye. In addition, your vision may be blurry, and the eyelid may swell.

The most common cause of a corneal ulcer is infection by bacteria, viruses, or fungus. For example, a scratch to the cornea that becomes infected can lead to a corneal ulcer.

Using contact lenses can also increase the risk of a corneal ulcer from a bacterial infection. This can happen if contact lenses are not kept clean or are worn while sleeping.

Chemical injury to the eye is another risk factor for a corneal ulcer, while any condition that causes dry eyes will also increase the risk, i.e. decreased tear production or being unable to blink normally.

Corneal ulcers are relatively simple to diagnose and can be diagnosed with a routine eye exam. During the exam, we will ask you about your medical history, recent eye injuries as well as contact lens wear.

Corneal ulcer treatment

This condition must be recognised and treated very carefully. In mild cases, intensive antibiotics and close follow up may be sufficient.

Corneal ulcers should improve in 2 to 3 weeks. Severe cases might require hospital admission with intensive day and night treatment. Severe ulcers may also lead to emergency corneal transplantation if corneal melting (perforation of the eyeball) happens.

After controlling the infection, if the corneal transparency is affected, we can suggest various treatment options to restore vision ranging from laser surgery or corneal transplantation.
